In-House/Same-Day Progesterone

Progesterone Testing can be beneficial to timing breeding.

What is progesterone?

Progesterone is a hormone released by the ovaries. The secretion of progesterone can be incredibly helpful when trying to determine your dog’s ovulation cycle. Understanding when your dog ovulates can improve fertility and increase accuracy in breeding attempts.

What is progesterone testing?

Progesterone testing is a simple test that measures the levels of progesterone secreted by your pet. It’s helpful to perform a progesterone test soon after your dog begins her heat cycle. Testing also helps to determine appropriate timing for planned cesarean section, which is necessary in some breeds. When you bring her in, our staff will draw a small amount of blood from your dog and then perform a test using special equipment at our hospital.

How long does it take?

Using our in-house laboratory equipment, a progesterone test can typically take between 18-20 minutes. Results will be delivered to you within the same day.
